Thoughts 10 Years Later
I was talking with a friend about the 10th anniversary of 9/11. The volume of materials being published in remembrance a decade later is vast. Photographs, videos and written recollections are everywhere and they are impossible to avoid. I can’t get through any of them without getting weepy. And so, like many, I try and limit how much time I let myself spend lost in that pool of incredible shared sorrow.
Like my friend, I was a college student, on a campus many miles away. And while I was born in New York, I didn’t know anyone who died in the attack that day personally. Yet, the anniversary of this day hits so hard each year.
One day, we were innocent. We were carefree and unburdened by the horrors of war or strike or conflict. And then, in a moment, we just weren’t.
My thoughts are with those remembering their loved ones today. They are also with the incredible men and women who choose to serve and protect us every day.
Today we all grieve for what we lost that September day ten years ago. But through our grief, I hope we also remember that there is more that unites us than divides us. With a uniquely American spirit, we stand strong and resilient, bruised a bit, shaken some, but never broken.
