David Eckoff President,   Revolutionary Ventures

Biray Alsac Health/Fitness Educator,   FITTmaxx Institute

Biray points out that 51% of the United States does not move, even though the surgeon general recommends that we get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. But we aren’t doing it. Why? She’s going to talk about how living in a tech savvy digital age, how we can use technology to keep us active.

Reasons we don’t exercise (from the audience):

  • Travel messes with our routine
  • We get in the zone of work and don’t stop to take a break
  • Social activities aren’t exercize-related
  • Family
  • Not being able to find the time to dedicate to fitness
  • You don’t see immediate results, so you aren’t motivated
  • You’re so busy all day long, you don’t want to exercise once you get off from work.

Biray thinks we need to change our outlook. Instead of calling it exercise, think of it as getting increasingly active.

When we make a decision to make a behavior change, there is a thought process, from pre-contemplation to actual action with a lot of steps in between.

  1. Pre-contemplation
  2. Contemplation
  3. Prepare
  4. Action

The technologies offered online focus on the pre-contemplation and contemplation phase. You have to go through the process of thinking and preparing before acting.

Biray uses twitter as an example of inspiring contemplation. i.e. If you see someone ran a mile, ate something healthy, etc… it inspires you to think about your own fitness routine.

[Personal aside: this is a great example. I was recently inspiried by a friend’s tweets and blogs about her journey to a more fit lifestyle. Now I tweet my own workouts too!]

Five ways David has gone from being a techno slug to an athlete:

  1. Get leverage: Associate massive pleasure with being fit. Associate pain with not working out.
  2. Schedule It! (TextReminders.com / WakerUpper.com)
  3. Measure bodyfat, not just a scale. Keep track of your data. (David uses hyrostatic body fat composition testing.)
  4. Change your self image to one that sees a fit/athletic person.
  5. Static Contraction Training
